  • 1/2 Cup Black Gram (with husk)
  • 1 Cup Rice
  • Salt (As Per taste)
  • 5-6 Garlic Pods
  • 1 tbsp Fenugreek (Methi) Seeds
  • 3 Cups Water
  • 1/2 Cup Fresh Coconut (Grated)
  • For the Seasoning:
  • 1 tbsp Gingelly (Til) Oil
  • 2 Green Chiili (slit lengthwise)
  • 1 tbsp Cumin (Zeera)
  • Curry Leaves (a few)


  1. Roast the Black Gram on a low flame, stirring it all the time, until it starts to waft a wonderful flavour. The authentic flavour of the Khichdi depends on how well you roast the Gram.
  2. Put the washed rice, roasted Gram, and all other ingredients in the Pressure Cooker and cook until 4 whistles come. Put the flame off. If you are using whole Black Gram you will need to let the mixture cook for a little more time.
  3. Heat a little oil in the seasoning pan and fry all the items of seasoning. Fry well till brown and add to the Pulagam (Khichdi). Finally mix the freshly grated Coconut.
  4. The Black Gram Pulagam (Khichdi) is delicious to eat whether hot or cold.
