Malabar Spinach Dal | Bachala Aaku Pappu | Healthy Recipe - All that the Telugus need to have a satisfying meal is Dal and fragrant Ghee with hot rice. That is why Dal is a must on the everyday menu. They are also in the practice of making Dal with all leafy greens and this Dal with Malabar Spinach is one such recipe.

Telugu meals start with a pickle or Chutney, then Dal, then curry, followed by a Fry. And Dal is a must item on the menu.

Dal recipes are aplenty but the one I share has a wonderful, savoury taste. Malabar Spinach Dal is usually made with Red Gram or Green Gram but I make it a little differently.

This Dal is ultra tasty when eaten with Hot Rice, Ghee, a pickle or an Omelette to accompany it.

Tips

  1. Dal should be soaked well before cooking. Then it cooks well.

  2. To the Red Gram Dal, add some soaked Green Gram and Bengal Gram for better taste.

  3. If you add Tamarind to the Dal before cooking, it does not cook all that well. So add Tamarind juice only after the Dal is cooked.

  4. Some add Onions to the Dal along with the Malabar Spinach and add a Garlic Seasoning. You could do that. But I have not used Onion or Garlic.

  5. Dal tastes better with Ghee Seasoning but you could use Groundnut Oil, if you like.

  6. If the Malabar Spinach is tender, use the stalks also. But if the Leaves are not tender, do not use the stalks, You could make a Buttermilk stew with the stalks.
