Sweet Potato Pulusu | Sakkaraivalli Kulambu | Spicy Chilakadadumpla pulusu

This spicy and tangy Tamarind stew with Sweet Potato pieces is a great combination with Hot rice.

Any fry that can be added as an accompaniment with this stew makes for a complete south Indian meal or Dinner. In Tamil, a Sweet Potato is called Sakkaraivalli and the stew is Kulambu.

The stew or Pulusu made by Telugu people is slightly dilute but the stews made by Tamilians are thick, spicy and tangy. Their meal is incomplete if there is no stew in the meal.

Follow the ingredients and the quantities I have suggested used to get a perfect taste.

Tips

Sweet Potatoes:

  1. I used Sweet Potatoes with less fibre and that is the reason I added them at the very end in the cooking.

  2. You can always cook up to 80% of the Sweet potatoes and add it to the stew at last.

Method to cut Sweet Potato:

  1. It should be cut into 1/2 inch pieces. If they are too small, they get mashed up and if they are too big, they take time to cook from inside

Sambar Onions:

  1. Sambar Onions taste great in this dish. But if you don't have them, use ordinary Onions cut into big pieces.

Jaggery:

  1. Usually, Sweet Potato by its very definition, has natural sweetness. I used jaggery as I wanted the stew to be even sweeter.

Finally:

  1. Stews taste good if they are patiently cooked on a low flame.Check the Salt and spice before removing from the fire.
