Then try my style special “Rava Upma” and I am sharing a detailed recipe with images and a video.

“Upma” is an evergreen favourite of South Indians and it is made at least twice a week in most households. When there are a lot of relatives or at the time of weddings, it is the Upma which is the easiest recipe to feed them.

I guess it is the frequency with which it is on the menu that this generation is totally put off by Upma. But make the way I recommend and the frown will go off their faces when they take a look at this Upma. “Upma” can be made popular if you follow the right measurements and tips. Tips

1.Add Cumin Seeds to the Bombay Rava and roast on a low flame. The aroma of the Cumin Seeds will get added to the Rava and the Upma will be tasty.

2.I have not used Onions in this recipe. But you could add Onions if you like.

3.Whatever the measure for the Upma, use 3 Cups Water and 1 Cup Milk per cup of Rava.

4.Milk gives Upma a nice, balanced and new taste.

5.The Milk will go flaky if you add Salt to the boiling Water. It should be added to the roasted Rava.

6.Add plenty of Bengal Gram and Black Gram to the Upma as they will taste nice and crunchy.

7.I have used Cashew Nuts but you could use Peanuts too, if you like.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup Bombay Rava
  • 1 tsp Cumin Seeds
  • 3 tbsp Oil
  • 1 tsp Mustard Seeds
  • 2 tsp Raw Bengal Gram
  • 2 tsp Black Gram
  • 2 Sprigs Curry leaves
  • 1 tbsp Ginger
  • 15 Cashew Nuts
  • 2 Green Chillies (thinly chopped)
  • 1/4 cup Ghee
  • Salt to taste
  • 1 cup Milk
  • 3 cup Water

Instructions

  1. Add Rava and Cumin Seeds to a pan and roast on a low flame until it gives out a nice aroma. It takes about 10 minutes for the Rava to turn aromatic.
  2. Heat oil in a pan, add Mustard Seeds, Bengal Gram, Black Gram and roast till they turn golden. Then add Curry leaves, Cashew Nuts, Green Chillies and grated Ginger and roast further.
  3. In the seasoning, add Water and Milk and let it boil on a high flame.
  4. In the roasted Rava, add Salt and pour slowly into the boiling water, stirring all along.
  5. Mix Rava well and let cook for 5 minutes and switch off the stove. Let it rest for 5 minutes.
  6. Finally, add some Ghee, mix, and serve.
