Tips

  1. Add Salt carefully as the bread contains Salt already.

  2. Use Sambar powder to enhance the flavour.

  3. I have used Brown Bread. You could use any other kind of Bread.

  4. I have toasted with Ghee for flavour. You could toast the Bread in a toaster too.

  5. The vegetables used in this Upma should not be overcooked. Then they get mashed and don't taste good. You should be able to taste each vegetable when you eat.

Ingredients

  • 6 Slices Brown Bread
  • 2 tbsp Ghee
  • 2 tsp Oil
  • 1 tsp Mustard
  • 10 Cashewnuts
  • 1 tsp Cumin/Jeera
  • 2 Sprigs Curry Leaves
  • 1 tsp Lemon juice
  • 1/2 tsp Red Chilli powder
  • Salt – As per taste
  • 1/2 tsp Sambar powder
  • 1/4 tsp Black pepper powder
  • 1 Tomato (Chopped)
  • 1 Onion (Chopped)
  • 1/4 cup Capsicum (Chopped)
  • 1 tsp Green chillies (Finely Chopped)
  • 1 tsp Ginger (Finely Chopped)
  • 1/3 cup Water

Instructions

  1. Heat ½ tbsp Ghee on a skillet and toast the bread on both sides.
  2. Cut the bread into pieces.
  3. Heat the oil and add the Mustard and Cashewnuts fry until golden brown
  4. Now add Cumin, Curry leaves, and chopped Onions and fry for roughly 1 minute until the onions are translucent.
  5. Now add chopped Tomatoes, Capsicum, green Chillies, Ginger, Salt, Red chilli powder, and the Sambar powder. Cook till the Tomato is soft.
  6. Add ¼ cup water to the above mix and cook on high flame and bring it to a boil.
  7. Now, add the Bread pieces, Coriander, and Lemon juice and mix well.
  8. Lastly, sprinkle 3 tbsp Water as it would help the Bread absorb the flavours.
  9. Sprinkle Pepper powder and serve it hot.
