Black Gram Rice | Urad dal Rice | Lunch box recipe | How to Make Black Gram Rice

Black Gram Rice is a popular recipe for lunch boxes and for leftover rice. But Telugus and Tamils used to make it as Prasadam too.

The present generation hardly remembers this recipe. But I see that it is still made in some traditional families, especially those that do not eat Garlic.

This aromatic Black Gram Rice does not traditionally have Onions or Garlic.

This is a perfect choice when you want something simple for the lunch boxes or to use up leftovers.

Tips

Black Gram :

This Rice tastes good only with Black Gram with skin but if you do not have it, then use regular Black Gram. Black Gram should also be roasted on a low flame. Only then will it get fried to the core.

Coconut:

The taste of raw Coconut is very good. If you don’t like that, use dry Coconut. But I would recommend Raw Coconut.

Ghee:

If you like you could use Oil instead of Ghee.

Onion and Garlic

In the traditional recipe, there are no Onions or Garlic. If you want to add Garlic, do add some while you grind the powder,
If you want to add Onions, once the seasoning is done, add Onions, Green Chilles fry well and add the Powder.

Some more ways:

You could make this recipe with Brown Rice instead of White Rice. And also with any Millets.
