Ice Apple Payasam | Taati Munjala Payasam

Tender Ice Apple (Taati Munjal) pieces are added to thick sweetened cold milk to prepare this special Kheer (Payasam) popular to many regions in Tamil Nadu. It is so irresistible that one cannot be satisfied with just one glass of this wonderful Kheer! Munjal (Ice Apple) Kheer is extremely delicious, though it is very simple to make.

A few months back I went to attend a friend’s wedding in Chennai. They served Ice Apple Payasam as welcome drink. I found it very refreshing. I straightaway approached the caterer and found out how this wonderful drink is prepared. Later I spoke around a little more and got to know some tips and authentic details. I am happy to share with you what I learned.

Tips

Ice Apple (Taati Munjal):

• You must get tender Ice apples for this recipe. Fully ripened Munjal will be hard and rubbery; and do not taste good in the Payasam.

• The water that oozes out of the Ice Apple when we cut the fruit can be added to the Kheer.

Milk:

• The Milk should be thickened to half the quantity that is taken originally

Dry Fruits:

• The feel of the crunchy dry fruit between the teeth while we eat the Kheer is very pleasant and adds to the taste. We can add any dry fruit. I have added almonds. I leave it to your preference.
